Targeted operations to be conducted in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: In the wake of recent terrorist attacks in the city, the provincial government has decided to carry out targeted operations in the provincial metropolis to flush out militants and miscreants.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Shahzad Arbab and attended by Home Secretary Akhtar Ali Shah, IGP Nasir Khan Durrani and top officials of police, district administration, Frontier Corps, 11-Corps and Frontier Constabulary. 
Secretary Interior Akthar Ali Shah, while briefing the media, after the meeting on Sunday night, said that two special task forces would be set up for the city to maintain peace and counter militant threats. 
One of the committees will be headed by the commissioner and the other will be under the IGP.
Akhtar Ali Shah said that Peshawar would be divided into four zones and targeted operations would be carried out in sensitive areas.

The emphasis of these targeted operations will be on bus stands, hotels and private inns which will be thoroughly searched. 

He said that a ready to move quick response force would be present in each zone along with the police.
"We have to comb the affected areas where miscreants might have a presence and than go against them," Shah stated.
The task forces would have representatives of the IGP, IG Frontier Corps and intelligence agencies. The chief secretary and their representatives will also make coordinated efforts to counter threats.
Akhtar said that the committees would also devise short and long-term measures to counter terrorism.He said that intelligence sharing and gathering would be improved and that public mobilisation would also be increased.
Shah said that 2009 was the worst year in terms of terrorist attacks, but "we successfully came out of it and now an effective strategy is on the cards".
Meanwhile, Governor Eng Shaukatullah has called a special meeting of the Apex Committee of the province today to discuss the situation emerging in wake of the recent series of terrorist attacks in the province. 
The meeting will be attended by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, Corps Commander 11-Corps Lt. General, Khalid Rabbani and others. The meeting will review the over all law and order situation with special focus  on further strengthening the ongoing measures to maintain law and order
