Dengue emergency declared in Swat

Dengue is spread by mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water and usually bite people during the daytime.ISLAMABAD/AFP: Authorities in northwestern Swat Valley have declared a health emergency after nearly 5,000 cases of dengue fever were reported in a month.

The virus, borne by mosquitoes which breed in stagnant water, has killed 17 people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province since August 19, 14 of them in Swat. Doctors said the number of patients is increasing every day.

Dengue causes high fever and severe joint and muscle pains.

“So far 14 people have died due to this disease while 4,934 persons tested positive. We have declared a health emergency in the district,” Abdul Khaliq, district health officer in Swat, told AFP by telephone.

CM wants early completion of Lawari tunnel, Swat-Kalam road projects
PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has said that Lawari tunnel and Swat-Kalam road projects have a key role in providing communication facilities to the local dwellers, promotion of economy and tourism in these areas.
The provincial government will not let the lack of resources to hamper the early completion of these projects.
He expressed these views during a briefing given to him by the high ups of National Highway Authority (NHA) regarding the ongoing developmental projects of the federal public sector development programme (PSDP) in the province here on Thursday.
These projects include Lawari Tunnel, Jhalkhand-chilas road, Peshawar Northern by Pass, Khushal Ghar Bridge, Takhtbai flyover, Chamkani Interchange, Alpuri-Bisham road, Chakdara Bridge, Mansehra-Chilas road etc.
Chairman NHA Maroof Afzal and others briefed the Chief Minister about the progress so far made on these projects, position of funding and other related issues.

The Chief Minister directed the NHA authorities to expedite work on these projects and assured that the provincial government will extend all possible support and cooperation to the NHA for the early completion of the projects.
He urged upon the authorities to utilize all the funds released for these projects before the financial year close and to take necessary steps for the timely completion of the projects so that people could soon benefit from these projects.
The Chief Minister specially stressed on the early completion of the Lawari tunnel and Kalam road because people of the areas were facing difficulties. He directed the concerned authorities to fence the under construction Peshawar Northern By Pass in order to make it safe.
He expressed his dissatisfaction over the low quality of work on the service road of motorway M-1 and urged the NHA authorities to conduct an inquiry into the matter.
On this occasion it was suggested to the NHA authorities to work on an alternate road from Swabi to Malakand instead of constructing the proposed tunnel in the hills of Malakand as the alternate road is cost effective and it reduces the distance considerably.
It was told that the provincial government had already made the feasibility and PC-1 of the said alternate road.
Besides the high ups of NHA, the briefing was also attended by provincial minister for communication and works, Yousaf Ayub, Additional Chief Secretary Khalid Pervez, Secretary Planning & Development , Dr. Asad Ali and concerned quarters of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Highway Authority. - APP

Dengue virus infected patients’ toll reaches 2400 in Swat

PESHAWAR: Dengue virus infected patients toll reached to 2400 in Swat, the focal person of the Saidu Sharif Hospital Dr Wasil Khan confirmed on Saturday after the reports of the 85 new persons infected with the deadly virus.
The number of patients in Swat district suffering from dengue reached 2400 on Saturday, chief executive of Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital Dr. Taj Mohammed Khan told APP when contacted.

Imran promises cheaper electric supply to Swat

MINGORA: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Monday said the people of Kalam valley would get Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan. Dawn— File photoelectric supply at half the Wapda price in the next summer after the revival and upgradation of the local hydropower unit.

He was speaking at a public meeting here following the inauguration of work on Kalam and Ashuran hydropower projects.

Provincial Chief Minister Pervez Khattak inaugurated the project by unveiling the plaque.

The two projects dysfunctional since 2008 are to be mostly funded by the European Union. The local population will also contribute funds to them.

Sarhad Rural Development Programme (SRSP) will execute the projects, which were earlier overseen by Small Hydel Development Organisation, recently made Pakhtunkhwa Hydel Development Organisation.

Imran vows to bring LB system that empowers people

Kalam/FP: Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf Chairman, Imran Khan on Monday said that his party was bringing such a local body system, which would empower the people and they would be able to make their own decision, Local TV reported.

Following inauguration of a power generation project here, addressing a gathering of elders Imran Khan said that a free nation makes its own decision and added Pakistan achieved freedom, but the nation was not freed.

He said that his party was bringing such a local body system in which the people would be free to make decisions on their own, they would have the power to elect their representatives.

PTI chief said poverty would not be eradicated unless a pro-people local body system was introduced. He said that no such local body system existed in Pakistan, which PTI was about to introduce.
