Maria Toorpakai Wazir becomes first female Nash Cup champion

Squash player Maria Toorpakai Wazir Pakistan’s squash player Maria Toorpakai Wazir put her name in the history books by winning the first ever women’s event in the Nash Cup in Canada by beating Milou van der Heijden of the Netherlands 13-11, 11-3, 11-9.

The victory gave Maria, who hails from South Waziristan, the third title of her WSA career after she won the Southwest Squash Open and the Liberty Bell Open last year in the US and was another milestone in her journey of immense courage and perseverance.

“When I win a tournament, I feel that I am moving towards my goals. So winning today means a lot to me,” Maria said after winning the Nash Cup.

4 precious falcons released

PESHAWAR: Minister for Environment and Wildlife, Haji Abrar Hussain Tanoli on Friday set free four precious falcons at Golf Club, Peshawar. Each falcon valued more than three million rupees in the open market.
Chief Conservator of Wildlife, Syed Mubarak Ali Shah and other officers were also present on the occasion.
It may be recalled that the said falcons had been captured from secret cavities of a Karachi bound bus during checking on Kohat road near Badaber.
The Minister gave an award of rupees 50,000/- from his own pocket to the officials who had captured these falcons.
He also directed the Chief Conservator Wild Life to give one step promotion to the said officials. - APP


Olive to be cultivated on 3,750 acre land: PARC

PESHAWAR: Through the olive plantation, 1,300 acre marginal land has been brought under olive cultivation and further 3,750 acre will be utilized in three years.
In addition to this, Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) has been conducting surveys all across the country to identify further land for olive cultivation, it was told in a meeting held at PAEC on Friday.
The meeting was further informed that the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) achieved olive plantation targets for the first year. Punjab component has completed olive plantation at and area of 251 acres, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at an area of 335.5 acres and 100 acres in FATA. Balochistan component has also completed plantation at an are of 215 acres.

Govt to up-grade transmission lines in KP

PESHAWAR: Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali on Friday informed the National Assembly that the government had started survey for the up-gradation of transmission lines in KP province.
Replying to a call attention notice moved by Sher Akbar Khan regarding non-existence of 220 KV Grid Station in Malakand Division resulting in load-shedding in different districts including Buner, Swat, Upper Dir, Lower Dir and Bajaur Agency, he said, Rs540 million had been transferred to KP government for the replacement of the grid station.

Entrepreneurs urged to support industrialisation projects

PESHAWAR: Governor, Engineer Shaukatullah has stressed the entrepreneurs of the province to come forward and invest in industrialisation oriented projects.
He said it would be helpful to generate job opportunities for youth and contribute significantly in the ongoing efforts of the government to strengthen and stabilize the economy of the country.
Addressing as the chief guest at the 10th KPCCI Business Excellence Award, 2011-12 in Peshawar, the Governor said, "I am quite conscious of the difficulties and aspirations of the business, trade and industry related circles of the province.
He informed that he is also in the process to make it convenient that the Federal Minister for Finance, Ishaq Dar visit the provincial capital and seek way forward in consultation with them to resolve their apprehensions.
